2017 Nithraid Procession Commission

Nithraid Smoke

**DEADLINE EXTENDED: Friday 4th August at 5pm**

The Stove is seeking a young creative person (25 or under) or a creative team (that includes at least one member who is 25 or under) to shape the Salty Coo procession at this year’s Nithraid.

This years Nithraid will take place on Saturday, 9th September 2017.
Nithraid is a community-led River Fesitival beside and on Dumfries’ River Nith (see The Salty Coo is the emblem of Nithraid and one part of the festival is a procession that carries the Coo from the centre of town down to the water.

Each year the procession is re-invented by a creative person/team – last year the procession was a performance piece on the theme of inclusion that was followed by people as it unfolded through the town, in 2014 a new street band was formed for the event who accompanied the Salty Coo with Balkan inspired folk tunes. This opportunity offers you the chance to put your stamp on Salty Coo and become part of Dumfries history!

You will be supported in developing and realising your ideas by members of The Stove team and there will also be stage management support to help you coordinate the procession on the day. This commission could suit a visual artist, performance or theatre maker, or musician – or a team combined of all of the above!

The budget available to you for the project is £1,000 (+ some travel expenses) – this will include all materials and your fee. There is also additional resource for working with other groups who have expressed an interest in joining in with this years procession.

If you would like to find out more about the project please contact The Stove on 01387 252435, or message us on social media – Matt Baker will be very happy to chat things through with you and answer any questions you might have.

Scandinavia and all things Viking are one of the themes of the Nithraid this year; there will be a Viking encampment beside the river for the event…so this might be one starting point for your ideas. We particularly like the Nordic creation myth that sees the world being brought into being by a cow licking salt water from a glacier..!

Please apply by sending a short letter outlining why you are interested in the project, any initial ideas you might have and how the project might help you develop as a creative person.
