Art_Inbetween Summit (now fully booked)

February 25, 2016

Art_Inbetween is an experiment in co-creating new approaches and sharing experience between artists, art organisations and other partners working in regions that are viewed as rural.

Towns, villages and other rural places provide a different challenge for artists and arts organisations. By necessity, the arts in rural regions often operate in an innovative, integrated and inbetween way – with the arts acting as a bridge between other forces at work in a place. In understanding the present and future value of the arts in society, there is a need to recognise, re-articulate and explore the distinctiveness of the contemporary rural arts scene. Art_Inbetween is an arts-led summit for people working in smaller places to come together to share experience, knowledge and dreams in a creative and useful environment. The summit is aimed at practising artists and arts organisations together with other stakeholders in the sector (eg education and academia, government agencies, development trusts etc)

Art_Inbetween is hosted by The Stove Network in Dumfries in collaboration with The Crichton Institute and Newcastle University and supported by Paul Hamlyn Foundation (Artworks in a Participatory Setting), Newcastle University (Institute for Creative Arts Practice), The Stove Network and Active Northumberland (Northumberland County Council).

  1. Art as Activism – what are the best strategies to affect change?
  2. ‘Ay Been’…Getting new things started in a rural context and demographic – innovative working methodologies
  3. Is there is no one in charge any more?……new thinking about structures for the way things are run
  4. Rural, Hinterlands, Nodes, Distance….Communication Eats Strategy for Breakfast
  5. What on earth does a ‘Cultural High Street’ look like?
  6. Can socially-engaged art be any good? …how can it be measured

Art_Inbetween will include a session on each of the above, if you feel a particular connection to any of these topics, have information to share or would like to be part of shaping/facilitating a session please get in touch for a chat.

Evening Session

We are planning a social evening as part of the Summit. This will involve food and activity arranged by artists. We hope that everyone will be able to stay for this, but whilst everything else at Art_Inbetween is free, we do need to make a charge of £10 per person for the evening to cover venue and catering.
