Body Image and the Older Woman
May 16 @ 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm
As part of the Luminate Scotland Festival, photographer Kim Ayres introduces his Women Over 50 project: creating bold, engaging nude portraits that seek to overturn the dominant narrative of women’s bodies being tied to a narrow paradigm of youth, impossible physical attributes and perceived sexual availability.
Join Maggie Broadley in conversation with fellow creative practitioners, Kim Ayres, Carolyn Yates, and Denise Zygadlo about these striking images and the issues they raise.
Maggie Broadly is a graduate of the Ceramics Department of the Glasgow School of Art. She has a broad perspective on the value of creativity to Scotland’s cultural, economic and social life and a deep commitment to support for arts practitioners and ‘grass-roots’ activity. She is currently also the development officer with DG Unlimited, the region’s membership organisation that works with, and provides a voice for, Dumfries and Galloway’s creative sector.
Carolyn Yates co-directs Buskers, a Dumfries and Galloway based spoken word and performance company celebrating the creative processes of women. She is preoccupied with the interaction between science, technology and women’s life cycles and is one of the thirteen artists awarded a Luminate Professional Development Bursary in 2019.
Denise Zygadlo’s work includes drawing, printing, performance and installation. Through drawing and collage, and incorporating transfer images of photocopies of her own wrapped body she creates visual images that explore the relationship between the body and cloth.
