Conversing Building X The Stove Cafe: Weaving the Decade

November 5 @ 9:00 am November 19 @ 3:00 pm

Weaving the Decade: An Exhibition by Solway Tapestry Weavers

This month in the Stove Cafe we are sharing an exhibition celebrating the tenth anniversary of Solway Tapestry Weavers, an opportunity for group members to show their skills as tapestry weavers who create their own designs. For this event, the group decided not to have a theme but to allow each weaver to choose their own yarn, colours, sett (warp and weft) and size of piece within a white frame of similar dimensions.

The exhibition is hosted in the cafe as part of The Stove’s Conversing Building programme, supporting visual and public arts programming in and around the Stove building.

The exhibition runs 5th – 19th November 2024, during Stove Cafe hours, Monday to Saturday, 9 am – 3 pm.

About Solway Tapestry Weavers

We first met in January 2014 at the Gracefield Arts Centre, in Dumfries but moved to Lochthorn Library when our room at the Gracefield became too small for our growing numbers. We had to move again when Covid struck and our venue was taken over as a vaccination station. We are now based at North West Dumfries Resource Centre in Lincluden where we have a comfortable and bright venue in a neighbourhood community centre.

We called ourselves Solway Tapestry Weavers because we have members from Cumbria as well as Dumfries and Galloway. During the ten years our membership numbers have remained fairly consistent (16-18) despite individual members coming and going as their lives changed. We have had an exhibition at the Gracefield as well as a previous one at the Stove and we had Christmas exhibitions in the foyer of Lochthorn Library when we were located there.

We have a learning ethos-with outside tutors being invited in to give demonstrations and talks; we visit exhibitions at other venues and our more experienced members teach new techniques which they have learned by travelling to external workshops. We have an annual Retreat at Higham Hall in Cumbria for members to enjoy a few days relaxing and exchanging ideas.
