In September, Reel to Real Cinema shares To See Ourselves, a personal documentary about hope and fear during the Scottish Independence Referendum by filmmaker Jane McAllister. We will be joined after the screening by the filmmaker to discuss the making of the film, and reflect on the impact on politics and identity in the 10 years that have followed.

About The Film

To See Ourselves is anobservational, deeply personal account of the 2014 Scottish independencereferendum as seen through the eyes of a pregnant filmmaker, as she follows heridealist father’s relentless activism and reveals the heart behindthe politics during this historic crossroads for Scotland.

Affectionatewithout being sentimental, To See Ourselves creates not just a valuabletime capsule of a pivotal moment in Scotland’s history, but afilm which encourages empathy, self-reflection and open and constructivedialogue about the future.

Reel to Real Cinema is a monthly film space in the Stove Cafe, featuring an eclectic mixture of conversational films – from artist made shorts to feature length documentaries, locally made to international cinema. A space for discussion and thought-provoking films, you are welcome to join us after the film for a short discussion about the themes from this month’s selection. The Stove Cafe will be open from 5.30pm – 6:45pm with a special pre-film dinner option alongside hot drinks and cakes.
