SUMMARY:Reel to Real: Rave on the Avon
DESCRIPTION:This month we are sharing the documentary film\, Rave on for the Avon\, a feature-length documentary film that follows a local community’s fight to save their bathing spot in unique\, daring & distinctly Bristolian ways. \n\n\n\nAbout the Film \n\n\n\nFilmed over two years in Bristol\, Rave On For The Avon is an intimate and action-packed documentary that explores the love for rivers shared by campaigners.  \n\n\n\nAn immersive and cinematic film\, it allows viewers to melt into the river\, to see\, hear and almost feel the tingling of the cold as swimmer dip their toes in. The film blends the cinematic and poetic with intimate\, observational filmmaking and action- packed adventure scenes. It is a real mix to show the tapestry of ways we love our local patch of the Avon and why we want to protect it. \n\n\n\nThis film delivers a sense of urgency about the critical state of the River Avon and how much the locals rely on it for their health and wellbeing\, hoping to galvanise audiences to campaign for policy change in the UK and abroad. Rave On For The Avon invites viewers to seek out swimming spots in their local area and fight to protect them. The situation is dire but there is hope and community to be found in protecting rivers.  \n\n\n\nWatch the trailer here: \n\n\n\nhttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V84OmOUIoG4&t=1s \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThe Cafe is open from 5:30 with refreshments available

SUMMARY:The Deep End
DESCRIPTION:An exhibition by Paul M. Thomas \n\n\n\nA photographic exhibition exploring demolition\, archive\, and memory. \n\n\n\nIn 2009\, the Dumfries Swimming Pool at the Greensands – built to Olympic scale in the 1960’s – was demolished. During its final days\, Paul Meynall documented the site as it shifted from a place of shared leisure into rubble. \n\n\n\nPart archive\, part artwork\, The Deep End captures a moment of transition – asking what we choose to remember\, and what becomes quietly forgotten. \n\n\n\nIt reflects on how easily the ordinary spaces that shape us can disappear\, and how our connection to place shifts with them. \n\n\n\nLayered with traces of the workers\, the land\, and the act of demolition itself\, the exhibition offers a grounded\, story-rich account of loss\, change\, and what remains. \n\n\n\nJoin us for an informal exhibition opening and talk from the artist.

SUMMARY:Tom Pow Book Launch
DESCRIPTION:You are cordially invited to the launch of TOM POW’s \n\n\n\nThe Vulnerability of Precious Things: Encounters with Simone Weil \n\n\n\npublished by Mariscat Press of Edinburgh and Molecular Press of Geneva \n\n\n\n(£12.00. ISBN 978 1 0686756 9 0) \n\n\n\n‘…the reality of life is not sensation but activity – activity in both thought and action.’ SW \n\n\n\nSimone Weil (1909-1943) was one of the 20th century’s most significant thinkers. Her ideas on affliction\, attention and force are as vital now as they were when she described them. Tom Pow’s poems (or ‘encounters’) engage with her short life and times. The resulting work – varied\, thought-provoking and moving – is a work of imaginative empathy that makes clear Weil’s relevance to the world today. \n\n\n\nFree tickets here \n\n\n\nIf unable to make the launch\, you can order the book from Mariscat Press \n\n\n\n(hamish.whyte@btinternet.com)

SUMMARY:Reel to Real: Still Pushing Pinapples
DESCRIPTION:This month at Reel to Real\, entertainment\, working class culture\, human connection\, the power of pop and the state of Britain align in a funny\, irreverent road movie that follows an ageing pop star as he chases one more chart success. \n\n\n\nAbout the Film \n\n\n\nWhat happens when you’ve created the worst hit song ever – at least according to the music press? What comes after fleeting fame\, and what does it mean to grow old still chasing a dream? \n\n\n\nKim Hopkins’ moving and funny follow up to her documentary A BUNCH OF AMATEURS features former pop star Dene Michael as he clings to the remnants of fame he once had as a member of 1980s novelty pop group Black Lace. \n\n\n\nThe band’s universally known hit Agadoo – both beloved and hated by many\, and the high or low point of any party – is what Dene’s best known for. Now\, performing for a dwindling\, ageing audience in some of the UK’s most deprived seaside towns and cities\, he’s eager to press on with his music career and get out from under the legacy of the Black Lace songbook. \n\n\n\nSTILL PUSHING PINEAPPLES follows Dene\, his spirited 89-year-old mum Anne\, and his sassy girlfriend Hayley across Britain and the Costa del Sol in this unmistakably British road movie. \n\n\n\nFilm Trailer \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Reel to Real Cinema \n\n\n\nReel to Real Cinema is a monthly film space in the Stove Café\, featuring an eclectic mixture of conversational films – from artist made shorts to feature length documentaries\, locally made to international cinema. A space for discussion and thought-provoking films\, you are welcome to join us after the film for a short discussion about the themes from this month’s selection. The Stove Café will be open from 5.30pm – 6:45pm with a pre-film dinner option alongside hot drinks and cakes.

Whether you’re promoting a gig\, testing an idea\, or just playing around\, you’ll be supported by two facilitators to bring something to life.No experience needed. It uses bright soy-based inks and a stencil-based method to produce bold\, textured\, layered prints with a beautifully handmade feel. Each colour is printed one or two layers at a time – meaning happy accidents\, weird overlaps\, and slight misregistrations are all part of the charm. It’s fast\, affordable\, eco-conscious\, and ideal for posters\, zines\, flyers\, art prints\, comics\, and more.Riso is loved for its vibrant colours that can’t be replicated through digital means\, low-fi textures\, and its power to turn the ordinary into something full of life and energy. It’s a bit like magic – but with rollers and drums

SUMMARY:Reel to Real: We are Making a Film about Mark Fisher
DESCRIPTION:This month we share an experimental film by artists Sophie Mellor and Simon Poulter (collaborating as Close and Remote) about the late theorist Mark Fisher\, blending documentary\, performance and new music. Doors open at 5:30pm\, film starts at 7pm \n\n\n\nAbout the Film \n\n\n\nWe Are Making A Film About Mark Fisher is a 65-minute cinematic experiment exploring the continuing relevance of the late theorist’s ideas on capitalism\, culture\, and the future. Directed by Simon Poulter and Sophie Mellor (collaborating as Close and Remote) the film was made in 2024-2025 using Instagram (@markfisherfilm) as a methodological tool to find collaborators\, generate research and disseminate content. \n\n\n\nWith over 70 invited contributors listed the film blends documentary\, performance\, new music\, and hauntological fiction. The main narrative follows Parkins – a time-slipped character – through ghostly landscapes and digital spaces\, tracing Fisher’s thoughts from the 1990s to our algorithmic present. A second narrative emerges from interviews conducted with theorists\, journalists\, and artists whose life and work have been influenced by him. \n\n\n\nThe film embodies Fisher’s call for collective imagination beyond capitalist realism. It ends in the room with a discussion about agency and what we can do next. \n\n\n\nThe film tours across Italy beginning 19 February 2026\, with screenings and Q&A events at a variety of locations. Full details on tour closeandremote.net \n\n\n\nAbout Reel to Real Cinema \n\n\n\nReel to Real Cinema is a monthly film space in the Stove Café\, featuring an eclectic mixture of conversational films – from artist made shorts to feature length documentaries\, locally made to international cinema. A space for discussion and thought-provoking films\, you are welcome to join us after the film for a short discussion about the themes from this month’s selection. The Stove Café will be open from 5.30pm – 6:45pm with a pre-film dinner option alongside hot drinks and cakes.

SUMMARY:The Loose Goose
DESCRIPTION:The Loose Goose: A Roving Laboratory of Radical Imagination \n\n\n\nEvery year at Guid Nychburris we celebrate the historic boundaries of Dumfries – riding the marches and honouring the traditions that mark where the town begins and ends. \n\n\n\nBut this year…one goose has slipped the gate. \n\n\n\nThe Loose Goose is a roaming cargo bike turned mobile imagination laboratory – part pirate radio station\, part musical playground\, part pop-up print studio. \n\n\n\nYou might hear it before you see it! Stop by and you might find yourself: \n\n\n\n\nPlaying with strange sound gadgets and musical instruments \n\n\n\nScreen-printing a rebellious goose to take home. \n\n\n\nSharing thoughts about the kind of place Dumfries could become\n\n\n\n\nBecause while Guid Nychburris celebrates the boundaries of the town\, the Loose Goose asks a playful question: \n\n\n\nWhat good ideas might be waiting just outside the gate? \n\n\n\nInspired by the wild geese that cross continents without borders\, the Loose Goose celebrates radical welcome\, freedom of imagination\, and the brilliant mix of cultures\, voices and possibilities that shape a town. \n\n\n\nNewcomers\, locals\, dreamers\, wanderers – everyone is welcome to join in. \n\n\n\nLet your imagination soar.

It’s a bit like magic – but with rollers and drums \n\n\n\nAccessibility Information  \n\n\n\nThe Print House is step-free and located on a single level\, with an accessible toilet available on site. \n\n\n\nThe space is compact\, so we recommend getting in touch in advance if you’d like to plan your visit. SUMMARY:Reel to Real Cinema: Silent Men: The Awkward Art of Expressing Emotion

SUMMARY:Print House: Make A Zine
DESCRIPTION:A zine can be anything. \n\n\n\nA true story. A comic. A rant. A poem. A game. A collection of things you’ve always wanted to say. \n\n\n\nZines are one of the simplest and most accessible ways to publish your ideas. Made from a single sheet of paper\, they’re quick to create\, easy to share\, and perfect for anyone who wants to experiment with storytelling\, drawing\, writing or design.  \n\n\n\nJoin us at Print House for this hands-on workshop and learn how to make your very own zine. We’ll cover the basics of folding\, planning\, creating and publishing your work – and by the end you’ll have a mini-publication of your own to take away. \n\n\n\nThen it’s time to get printing. \n\n\n\nUsing the Print House Risograph printer\, you’ll make copies of your zine while learning the unique art of RISO printing. Experiment with colour layering\, bold combinations\, textures and happy accidents as you discover why Risograph has become a favourite tool of artists\, designers and independent publishers around the world. \n\n\n\nNo experience necessary\, just bring your curiosity and imagination. \n\n\n\nImportant Info: \n\n\n\n\nSpaces are limited and offered on a first-come\, first-served basis\n\n\n\nAge restriction: 14+ \n\n\n\nIf you sign up but can no longer attend\, please let us know ASAP so we can offer your space to someone else.\n\n\n\n\nWhat is risograph printing? \n\n\n\nRisograph (or ‘riso’) is an unpredictable print process that sits somewhere between screen printing and photocopying. It uses bright soy-based inks and a stencil-based method to produce bold\, textured\, layered prints with a beautifully handmade feel. \n\n\n\nEach colour is printed one or two layers at a time – meaning happy accidents\, weird overlaps\, and slight misregistrations are all part of the charm. It’s fast\, affordable\, eco-conscious\, and ideal for posters\, zines\, flyers\, art prints\, comics\, and more. \n\n\n\nRiso is loved for its vibrant colours that can’t be replicated through digital means\, low-fi textures\, and its power to turn the ordinary into something full of life and energy. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAccessibility Information\n\n\n\nThe Print House is step-free and located on a single level\, with an accessible toilet available on site. \n\n\n\nThe space is compact\, so we recommend getting in touch in advance if you’d like to plan your visit. We’re happy to provide photos or video of the space to help you get a sense of the layout before arriving. \n\n\n\nWe are continuing to develop our accessibility and welcome conversations about what would make your visit more comfortable.
