The Stove Network is seeking applications from artists/teams to create a temporary visual/light-based artwork for this year’s Nithraid River Festival in Dumfries. The NithLight commission will be presented in public space, to be experienced from a distance and close up as part of the night-time element of the Nithraid during hours of darkness from 8pm.
Nithraid is an artist-led public event that is now in its 7th year, this year’s date is August 31st 2019. The festival is sited in and around the River Nith where it passes through the town centre of Dumfries. In previous years we have included a night-time part of Nithraid, solely on the main festival site. This year we are working with pubs and bars to put on music around the town centre to spread the impact and diversity of the festival. We are looking for artists/teams to create a visual spectacle on the main festival site during the evening that will:
- Make a visual/conceptual link between the river and the night-time Nithraid activity in the town centre
- Provide a space on the main festival site where people can gather during night-time Nithraid for a more intimate experience of the visual work and potentially some ambient sound and refreshments
- Connect to this years Nithraid theme of Salt and the rituals, uses and history associated with it (local, historical and mythical).
- Engage with local community activity in Dumfries
Nithraid is a creative platform to support community activity in Dumfries and the wider region. The Stove Network works in partnership with a diverse range of community groups, projects and local agencies. It is expected that the commissioned artist/team will meaningfully engage with community projects/groups in creating their work for Nithraid 2019
Nithraid takes place between 12noon and 11pm – this commissioned work must be available to the general public from 8pm until 11pm, although it may be live for longer. We are open to all possibilities for the medium employed in making the work. There is no other formal background information available about the commission (view information about previous year’s festivals here) , if you are interested to know more and/or have specific questions, please get in contact with the project team (see below).
We are offering a fee of £3000 (inclusive of all materials, expenses and tech) for an artist/team to deliver the work. You will be joining a highly motivated and experienced production team and have access to the Stove membership and all our contacts with local groups etc. However, please be aware that there will be limited voluntary practical support available to the commissioned artist/team, as the Nithraid festival village and sail boat race is a very resource heavy project to deliver; you will be expected to deliver all aspects of your project within your own budget.
If you are interested to discuss an idea with us before making an application, please get in touch by email: firstname.lastname@example.org
Please apply for the commission by sending the following:
