Open Hoose – Nith Life

April 30 @ 6:00 pm 8:00 pm

Part of our Open Hoose Programme and inspired by conservation initiatives across the country, a new group wants to question and explore what exactly a Conservation Trust for the River Nith might look like. This is the ideal opportunity for those passionate about protecting one of our most extraordinary natural assets to get together and look for solutions faced by our River Nith.

At this month’s meet-up, we will be joined by expert botanist Chris Miles who will be talking about wildflowers and trees.

Ran by a community steering group supported by The Stove Network &  UNESCO Galloway & Southern Ayrshire Biosphere, Nith Life is a rapidly evolving initiative dedicated to engaging communities through creativity, technology and science to explore our connection to the River Nith, from source to sea.

If you would like to stay updated and informed on everything the group are up to do follow their Facebook page HERE.

The Stove Cafe will be open for pre-event food and drinks from 5.30pm, the event will start at 6pm sharp.

Open Hoose: Climate Kitchen

April 19 @ 5:30 pm 8:00 pm

The Climate Kitchen, run by local community members, is a space for learning, sharing, contributing and working together to do something positive for the climate!

This month’s meet-up theme is ‘Grow Your Own: Plant Pot to Garden and Allotment’.

We’ll be helping you answer questions such as “What should I plant?”, “When should I plant?” and “How should I plant it?”. We’ll be developing a Seed Library to get you started, so please bring along any fruit and vegetable plants or seeds you have spare, with instructions on when and where to plant them, and when to harvest.

Incredible Edible will speak to us all about how to unlock the health benefits of community gardening, and where to go in Dumfries to learn growing skills from others, and pick up fresh produce completely free!

And Stephen Mohan, a teacher at Dumfries Academy, will share a community planting project with his students, showing us how we can grow a garden, even in a small space and with few resources.

Climate Kitchen is open to anyone and everyone! This evening promises to be simple, fun, effective, and suitable for all skill levels including.

The Stove Cafe will be open for food and drinks from 5.30pm, so if you’ve got an appetite for change OR an appetite for a cuppa and some locally sourced food then we look forward to seeing you there!

Doors open at 5.30pm for food, the event starts at 6pm sharp.

Doongamers – Magic: The Gathering

April 17 @ 6:00 pm 10:00 pm

Magic: the Gathering is a collectable trading card game dating back to 1993. Players use their decks, containing lands, spells, and creatures, to battle against their opponent using a variety of tactics and strategies until one player emerges victorious.

Magic comes in many formats, each with its own list of cards that are allowed to be played in that format.

The Pioneer format (the one chosen by Team Scoop to be played at The Stove) is beginner friendly, accessible, and fun, with cards from late 2012 (Return to Ravnica) being legal, with a few exceptions that have been banned due to their power level.

Games (Over 18’s)

Pioneer: £5 entry fee will add 1.5 boosters to the prize pool per player, with each player receiving one pack, and the rest being distributed amongst the top scoring players.

Commander/other casual play: Free, can be arranged into pods/events on demand.

More information can be found at magic.wizards.com or by contacting us via our Facebook Group (Team Scoop Magic Club) or joining our Discord (https://discord.gg/wg8REfc).

What is Magic?

Bringing people together through fun, competition and friendship.

At a glance, Magic is a trading card game filled with strategic battles and unique card decks. But Magic has always been bigger than the box. Whether you’re having fun at the kitchen table, or battling in a high-stakes competition, there’s a place for you here.

5 colours. 5 play styles. Endless possibilities.

Each of the five colours in Magic represent a different philosophy and a different play-style. Choose your colour(s) to decide which type of land you’ll be drawing resources (mana) from and what type of Magic you’ll wield.

Who are Doongamers?

Doongamers are a friendly, inclusive community of Doonhamer gamers with a passion for geek culture from Magic to D&D, Digimon to collectables! Hosting regular gaming sessions at the Stove Cafe, the community is always on the look-out for new members. With a community both in-person and online, Doongamers is fun-first, competition second. Oh, and milkshakes. Lots of milkshakes.

WRITE at The Stove Cafe

April 3 @ 7:00 pm 9:00 pm

Welcome to our April WRITE meet-up! Join us at this monthly creative writing workshop with author Karl Drinkwater.

WRITE! is all about letting your imagination guide your hand. In each session we’ll chat about a writing-related topic, then provide prompts and a theme, and the opportunity to write based on the inspiration. It might be a character sketch, or a piece of description or dialogue. The key thing is that it will be your words, and they’d never have been born if you’d stayed at home that night.

The short piece you write could be practice or a creative outlet. However, it could become the seed of a short story, or part of a longer work. Hopefully we’ll end each friendly and informal session with the opportunity for some people to read out what they wrote, as a celebration of the new words.

Sessions are expertly guided by thought-provoking prompts, offering dedicated time for free-flowing expression. Afterward, participants have the opportunity to share their creations within supportive groups, receiving valuable tips to enhance their writing skills and boost confidence. Whether you’re rediscovering the joy of the creative process or seeking inspiration for your existing project, Write fosters a collaborative and experimental environment. Fuel your next big project with the friendly encouragement and creative energy that defines Write.

The next session (April) is on engaging the senses by describing smells and scents. So it would be great if everyone could bring in a number of items with smells to share around, anything distinctive. Vinegar, sliced apple, mint leaf, perfume, essential oils, freshly cut grass in a tub, a newly washed blanket, a brand new paperback book, coffee beans – whatever you can think of!

Open to: everyone! It doesn’t matter whether you’ve never written anything before, or if you’re an established author looking for a brief shot of espresso creativity. It’s not a course, so you can attend any or all sessions, as you wish.

So come along. We’ll provide the inspiration and a supportive group of new friends. All you need to do is bring your pen*, engage your heid, and write!

(* Of course it’s fine to bring a laptop or gadget instead of pen and paper: words are words, whatever the medium!)

The Stove Cafe will be serving drinks and nibbles from 6.30pm – 7pm

IMPORTANT INFORMATION: As WRITE! is a very popular event, you must pre-book via Eventbrite to secure a place at this workshop. Please do not arrive at the workshop without a pre-booked ticket, as we may have to turn you away due to reaching full capacity in our event space.

Reel to Real X D&G Climate Hub: Outgrow the System

April 5 @ 7:00 pm 9:00 pm

Guest Hosted by Katie Percival & Julie Douglas from Climate Kitchen.

Outgrow the System | Cecilia Paulsson & Anders Nilsson | 58 mins

This month, with support from GSA Biosphere we are holding a screening of Outgrow the System a documentary film exploring new economic ideas and practices for a more sustainable global future. “Change is not only possible, but already underway.” We will be joined by guest hosts from Dumfries Climate Kitchen to host a post-film discussion with the film’s co-director Anders Nilsson.

Supported by D&G Climate Hub.

About the Film

A DOCUMENTARY ABOUT TRANSITIONING TO A SUSTAINABLE ECONOMIC SYSTEM

“Change the system, not the climate” is a common demand in the climate movement. But whatkind of system do we actually want? In the midst of humanity’s worst crisis, the pioneers stand ready. Meet the new economic perspectives that have the potential to change the world at its core.

The original meaning of the word ”economy” is “household management”. The economy of today however, is not house holding, but rather consuming our finite natural resources at an alarming pace. “Outgrow the System” explores how we can return to the essence of the term and design an economic system that genuinely manages our scarce resources.
