Climate Kitchen’s AUGUST event: INTERNATIONAL CONSERVATION PERSPECTIVES

FROM: graduates of Glasgow University’s Crichton Campus Masters in ENVIRONMENT, CULTURE & COMMUNICATION

Who’s heard about the red kite that preys on lambs for fun? The murderous seagulls that will peck your eyes out for your ice-cream? The ASBO badgers, or the beavers out to destroy your garden? And what about lions and tigers and bears? And who’s heard the one about the single species that’s wiped out thousands of species of animals and plants, either for food or for furniture, for style or for scent or for sport?

Human-animal conflicts are a huge concern for anti-species reintroduction campaigners, but how much do we know about the animals we fear, and how do we balance our need for safety and control against the overwhelming evidence that we need nature-based solutions to the climate emergency just as much as we need nature itself?

This month we’ll be hearing some international perspectives on the human-animal conflicts that ensue when humans expand into wild areas and learn from them to inform our own climate resilience projects in Scotland. How do global nations respond to calls to rewild their depleted natural spaces? Who are the ecosystem engineers in other parts of the world, and how have our global community adapted to share the planet with them (or not)?

Drawing on personal stories, philosophies and values, facts and folklore, we’ll hear reflections from graduates of the Glasgow University Crichton Campus Masters programme in Environment, Culture & Communication Nimaya Lemal, George Crompton, Lainey Cartwright and Sreemathi Mariappan, as well as our very own Aparna.

The Stove Cafe will be open for food and drinks from 5:30pm, so if you’ve got an appetite for change OR an appetite for a cuppa and some locally sourced food then we look forward to seeing you there!

CLIMATE KITCHEN JULY 2024: HOW E-BIKES CAN TRANSFORM OUR TOWN

Ever fancied getting an e-bike but don’t know if it’s for you? Have you been put off by scare stories about exploding batteries, puzzled by the choice of bikes or does the cost seem too high? Want to know how e-bikes could transform the way we travel in Dumfries, and how they could significantly reduce carbon emissions from transport in Scotland? Then our next Climate Kitchen event might just be for you.

Tim Godwin, a local e-bike enthusiast and builder of e-cargo bikes, will lead us through an evening of e-bike explainers, myth-busting, how e-bikes can help improve our town, our community and our health, and what cities and governments around the world are doing to make e-bikes more accessible as an alternative to cars and pollution.

We’ll be looking to answer the question – why is Scotland (and the rest of the UK) lagging behind the rest of the world, and what can we do about it?

Join us for a warm welcome, some good grub and a friendly discussion that might just give us the tools to turbo-charge the way we travel!

Climate Kitchen is open to anyone and everyone! This evening promises to be simple, fun, effective, and suitable for all skill levels including.
