April’s theme: Growing Season: Foraging, Listening & Planting Together

Jump into Spring with a brilliant gathering of speakers from local organisations involved with growing, gardening and connecting with the plant kingdom. Come along to get a taste for what is going on near you and learn how to get involved this growing season.

Old Mill Arts will be talking about foraging, what different plants can be used for and Freya Skinner will be bringing a basket of wild finds for folk to see (and taste) for themselves.

There are many community gardens flourishing in the region, and Propagate will be coming along to spread the word and talk about how to get more involved.

Learn about Plant Listening with Tamara Colchester sharing her work connecting people to the natural world around them through walks, foraging and community events.

Finally, we’ll have space for a seed swap. So, come along with any surplus seeds you have and/or have the opportunity to take some seeds back home and get planting!

The speakers will be starting at 6pm. The event will finish around 8pm. Dumfries Climate Kitchen is free to attend, but we will accept CASH DONATIONS on the night to help fund our future events.

This Month’s Theme: IT’S CARBON STORAGE, FOR PEAT’S SAKE!

What is PEAT? Why is it so important in the climate and biodiversity emergency? And why is it so important in Scotland?

When we think about carbon capture and carbon storage, we might think about forests or niche technology not yet proven at scale. It can be easy to overlook peatlands, which cover 20% of Scotland and provide a host of carbon storage, flood defence, and biodiversity services (as well as giving you soggy feet).

In a healthy, or near natural condition, peatlands absorb carbon dioxide and lock carbon into the ground. Healthy peatlands are gigantic carbon stores, having locked away carbon for thousands of years. But decades of misunderstanding of the value of peatland has led to modification, which has resulted in severely degraded peatlands. Instead of storing carbon, degraded peatland is a source of carbon emissions releasing an estimated 6% of global CO2 emissions a year. How can that be? And what can be done about it?

We’re delighted to host Kerry Morrison (socio-ecological artist) and Anna Basley (Peatland Programme Manager) from the Crichton Carbon Centre. CCC is best known for its peatland restoration and Kerry and Anna will talk to us about peatlands and restoration. There will also be the opportunity for us to talk about what we can do to support these precious ecosystems.

February’s Climate Kitchen: The Environmental Life Cycle of an Item.

Have you ever considered all the work that goes into making even a plain white T shirt? How many materials are involved, where they’re all grown, mined, or manufactured, who does all the making and in what conditions, or how many times round the world the components of your product travel before being delivered to your high street or doorstep?

This month we’ll be dissecting the global footprint of everyday items and asking ourselves: what items justify the environmental impact of producing them, and are there more eco alternatives?
