The Environmental Art Festival Scotland 2015 – an international biennial of contemporary art practice in the landscape – went offgrid into the wilds of the Lowther Hills, a two day festival based at Morton Castle near Thornhill. EAFS 2015 explored themes of generosity and hospitality, journeys and migrations, and foolishness and playfulness as a means of understanding the world – through a weekend of art installations and experiments, walks, talks, performances and campfire discussions.

EAFS was a point of gathering, meeting and discussion in the open air, with walks and adventures out into the landscape, in the evenings visitors returned to the festival site to exchange new discoveries made during the days explorations, and to gather around the EAFS campfires to discuss everything from navigating new futures to death and the unknown, tracing local water courses  to challenging new ways to tackle global climate change.

EAFS 15 was created and co-produced by The Stove Network and Wide Open working with the amazing Robbie Coleman and the  EAFS recharge team, with additional support from Spring Fling.

Brave New Words

Building on the success of Open Mouth during The Stove’s Open House events, we welcome back Sindigo and Eryl Shields, alongside curatorial member Martin O’Neill who are hosting Brave New Words, a day of performance poetry and spoken word at the Stove. Brave New Words is an afternoon of free discussion events, workshops and one to one consultations for the aspiring performance poet, followed in the evening by Dumfries’ first ever poetry Slam, with the winner securing a place in the Scottish Slam Championships in Glasgow!
Whether you’re a seasoned professional or have never done it before we want to hear from you!
There is absolutely no restriction on content.

2PM – 3PM: Sotirius Frantzanas: Democracy: What does it mean now?

Sotirius shall host a discussion on the meaning of democracy in the 21st Century. How does it relate to the current political landscape and in turn, our personal life? Is there such a thing as a truly democratic society? An open discussion and lecture on the process, philosophy and meaning of democracy in 2015.

3PM – 4PM: Emily Elver: Personal is Political

Emily Elver is a ground-breaking spoken word performer from Edinburgh who combines the shocking and mysterious with the mundane, disgusting and delightful. There is no subject matter off limits and she deals out laughter and gasps in equal measure. She co-hosts Poetry Circus and is editor of Edinburgh’s newest literary magazine Freak Circus

Emily’s workshop aims to help remove some of the stumbling blocks aspiring writers and new performers have when trying to tell a personal tale. Emily will offer guidance on how to approach personal subjects confidently through discussions and readings of her work, followed by one to one advice and mentoring for the aspiring performance poet.

4PM – 5PM: Rory O’B: Rhyming and Rapping

Rory O’B is a fiercely intelligent rapper and talented musician from Oban. He has played at Kelburn, Audio Soup and The Loch Lomond Boat Party and performs to enthusiastic crowds both as a solo artist and with Ciaran Mac. He is currently part of Volition in Glasgow and runs exciting rap workshops for young people.

Rory O’B’s workshop looks at the origins of Hip-Hop culture, where it’s going and how we can relate it to our lives. Participants will have the chance to write their own rap, get to grips with rhythms, rhyming techniques and patterns with the opportunity to perform what they’ve written to the group.

7PM – Slam Championships

Brace yourselves for Dumfries’ first ever poetry Slam! Expect the controversial, heartfelt, beautiful, disgusting and joyous. Staged in three rounds, the winner will go on to compete in the Scottish Slam Championships in Glasgow.

Young Stove Member Profile: Sara Redden

What is your earliest memory?

My earliest memory was when I was 2 years old on holiday and my dad got me a fishing net. He convinced me that the plastic fish were real and I tried to eat them.

What drew you to The Stove?

I think what interested me most about the stove was the fact everyone is on the same team, it’s like one big family striving to make things better for everyone.

Which person do you most admire, and why?

I admire anyone who can go through a huge ordeal and still manage to smile at the end of the day.

What time of the day do you like most?

I love seeing the sunset, its so relaxing to see and I find the duller tone more calming.

Share your hope and dreams for The Stove?

I hope that the stove will continue to strive and be the main attraction of Dumfries and Galloway.

What’s something that you found yourself enjoying that you never thought you would?

I walk a lot and am still able to love it.

Which film changed your life?

Ratatouille…I imagine all of the little rats of Dumfries cooking away whilst the chefs are distracted.

What’s been the most exciting part of the Stove Process for you?

Seeing the building come together and the development of the young stove.

What songs do you carry closest to your heart?

Blue Velvet, my dad always sang this to my mum.

What do you consider your greatest achievement?

My daughter

Tell us about your creative process.

Mind maps first, then lots of drawing onto photos with markers and cutting and layering papers and fabrics until I can figure out a concept that looks good and start to turn it into something tangible

What is your earliest memory?

My third birthday but actually the only thing I can remember about it was the cake. It was literally covered in every kind of sweet 3-year-olds are into and it must have been a good cake if it’s managed to stay in my memory that long above anything else from around that time

What drew you to The Stove?

Wanting to be part of something with a bigger purpose

What time of the day do you like most?

Early morning because it’s fresh and new

Would you share three words that you love?

Reduce, re-use, recycle

What’s something that you found yourself enjoying that you never thought you would?

Exercise and neutral colours

Who, from throughout history, would you like to sit and have a good chat with?

Andy Warhol because of our shared passion for sugary food and minimal answers to interview questions

What’s the best piece of advice you have ever got?

“You’ve got the inspiration. You just have to bat away the naysayers and keep focused. Life really is too short. No one’s around on this planet long enough to really understand fully what’s going on. With the risk of sounding too morbid, we’re all scared little kids, right through to old age, right through ’til the day we die…Imagine 80 sweets, then imagine again as many Christmases or birthdays. It’s not that many really. Take your life and run with it. It’s yours” – I had to dig through 3 years worth of Facebook messages to find that but it had a huge impact on me at the time

Young Stove Member Profile: Lauren Souter

-tell us about your creative process-
I’m still trying to figure what my process is, I find I go from putting a bunch of things that inspire me together and taking out what catches my eye, I guess I take process as it comes, I go with my gut feeling more than anything.
-what drew you to the young stove?-
The upcoming artist event last summer,  I was told about it from a friend and went, it was the first time if seen an artist-type event in DG so I was excited.

-which person do you most admire and why?-
Nicola sturgeon, I love Nicola, I love that she stands up for Scotland and that she’s really down to earth and isn’t superficial like most politicians.

-would you share 3 words you love?-
Buzzing, Kale, Biddy.

-share your hopes and dreams for the stove?-
I’m not sure, I’d really love to see it flourish through all of D+G and outside, id love to see the stove be more recognised here for what it does though.

-what’s something that you’ve found yourself enjoying that you never thought you would?-
Bingo, I hate numbers but my family all go every week so I’ve joined in the odd time and I’ve found it’s quite weirdly fun? Haha

-what film changed your life?-
I dunno if they’ve changed my life but maybe legally blonde? I love how Elle suddenly does really well and it’s quite motivating to watch haha

-what’s been the most exciting part of the stove process for you?-
Have to say parking space, I loved that event it was really really interesting

-what makes you feel alive?-
Midnight car journeys and going to new places

-what songs do you carry close to your heart?-
I’m on and off with songs, but I’d say ‘we bros’ by this group called WU LYF

-what’s your dream for the artists in D&G?-
To get more recognition, I feel DG has so much to offer in terms of artists

Elizabeth the 1st maybe, I think she would a bit intimidating to talk to but I think she would be fascinating

-what instrument would you play if you could instantly master it-
The harp or when people make music from glass cups

-what would you consider your greatest achievement-
A 6 hour journey on a bumpy stagecoach bus carrying a box of delicate glass and none of it broke..hahaha

-where’s your favourite place to be in D&G?-
Portpatrick, it’s such a coastal town and it’s really idyllic and beautiful

-what’s your favourite piece you’ve produced?-
Creating a collection of glass vessels with glass artist Amanda Simmons,  I’ve never had many opportunities like that and it really opened my eyes to what’s out there

-What five books do you think everyone should read?-
One flew over the cuckoos nest by Ken Kesey
The bell jar by Sylvia Plath
The Bfg by Dahl
The little stranger by Sarah waters
And the woman in black by Susan hill

-what makes you happiest?-
Travelling, car journeys the most but also train journeys
Good food

-tell us your passion?-
Most creative things, Art, not sure what specifically yet but definitely something within Art

Young Stove Member Profile: Sullivan Michael

What is your earliest memory?
I remember in the flat with Mum and the radio and a song with brass instruments was playing.  It was night time and the kitchen was yellow.  (It was usually yellow at night, and bluey-grey in the day.)  This could have been around winter time.  We were making a pizza with a smiley face on it.  It tasted disgusting.  We laughed.

What drew you to The Stove? 
Sauron.

What’s your favourite place to be in D&G?
Kirkbean…  The woods, the fields, the river with the cave.

What’s been the most exiting part of the Stove Process for you?
I suppose the most exciting part is seeing a variation of ideas and being part of interesting discussions with all these different artists.  Meeting new and intruiging people with great imaginations is a brilliant experience.

What instrument would you play if you could instantly master it?
Ocarina of Time.

Would you share three words that you love?
Sing, Treasure, Lux.

Tell us about your creative process.
Sometimes it’s hectic, sometimes it’s structured.  I’d say it’s a balanced combination of the two.  When I’m certain of what it is that I’m doing, then suddenly uncertainty may arise to spur on an unexpected avenue.  If I’m not quite sure of where it is that I’m going, then I’ll just wander blindly until my right hand grips the banister a split second prior to what could have been a plumetting journey down the staircase.  Sometimes I take that plummet too.  I am quite orderly beneath all the chaos though…  Or maybe it’s the other way around.

What’s the best thing anyone’s said to you?
“Eyes down.”

Tell us a joke.
(At this point we had to pause the interview as Sullivan began breathing into a paper bag, body contorted, rocking backwards and forwards in a most awkward manner.) 

What’s the best piece of advice you have ever got?
“Keep going.”

Tell us your passion:
My passion is to express myself… So I’ll do that to the very best of my ability.  And on those most formidable of lazy days, I’ll drag myself into action kicking and screaming.  It’s the least I can do for myself.

What’s your dream for the arts in D&G?
Uninhibited imagination (with bells on).
